Novokuybyshevsk is located on the left bank of Volga 20 km away from Samara. Trunk-railway Moscow - Samara runs near the city.
Novokuybyshevsk ranks among the cities founded after the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). For rather short period the city has managed to become a large territorial production complex. Today Novokuybyshevsk is a large industrial hub of the Samara region with the strong developed enterprises of the fuel and petrochemical industry.
In 1946 nearby the villages of Russkie Lipyagi, Mordovskie Lipyagi and Chuvashskie Lipyagi (which have been known since 18 centuries) the construction of the largest in the country oil refinery plant began. At that time a town of Novo-Kuybyshevsky has been built for oil-industry workers. The location of this town turned out to be so advantageous that the decision was made to transform it into the large industrial center. In 1951 the first production was turned out at the plant, and in 1952 Novo-Kuybyshevsky was transformed to the city of regional submission.
Population of the city is 112.3 thousand persons. Today Novokuybyshevsk is a city with highly developed oil refining, chemical and petrochemical industry, the important power center of Russia.
To take this fact into account, it is not surprise that Novokuybyshevsk ranks among the cities of Russia with high level of air pollution.
Novokuybyshevsk is a young, dynamically developing city, so the question of supporting of young people is of great importance. Therefore for the last years the basic stances of a youth policy in the sphere of education, science, culture and sports have been developed.
As for education and science, Novokuybyshevsk has many state educational institutions of the secondary, secondary vocational and higher education. Besides, there are institutions of extended education of children (music school, school of arts etc) and some scientific research institutes in the city.
The cultural life of Novokuybyshevsk is presented by the Youth club "Russia", city culture center, Novokuybyshevsk city history Museum, Youth Theater «Time of secrets», folk theater and the Choral chapel "Aura". All of them make a considerable contribution to a social and culture development of the city.
The Novokuybyshevsk library network includes the Central library named after A.S.Pushkin (which is one of the most equipped in the Samara region), the Central children's library and 8 branches.
The interregional music festival «VIOLA ART» is really landmark of the city. The festival is annually held under the patronage of maestro Yury Bashmet in the Children's music school bearing a name of this outstanding musician. Many significant events, which already became traditional, are held in Novokuybyshevsk, the All-Russian theatre festival «Provincial theaters of Russia» and the International children’s film festival have a special place among them.
Novokuybyshevsk is also a city with a very replete sport life. Such sports as volleyball, basketball, table tennis, swimming, boxing, taekwondo, chess and children's football got most developed here.
