Kinel, based in 1837 as a village, is located on the left bank of the Bolshoy Kinel 41 km away from the regional center. The city has very advantageous transport geographical location in the central part of the Samara region and fulfils an important transport function among cities of Russia. Besides the largest railway junction, here there is a road interchange with driving directions to Ural Mountains and Siberia, Moscow, Volgograd and the South of Russia.

In 1877, during the construction of railroad line Samara-Orenburg, the railway station Kinel (until 1884 called Charykovskaya) was built, which became the railway junction 1888. Now Kinel is one of the largest railway yards in Russia. It provides function of railroad lines in 4 directions: Ural Mountains – the West, Central Asia – the Center.

In 1944 Kinel was given the status of a city of district submission, in 1963 it became a city of regional submission, and now the city is an administrative center of city district of Kinel.

At the time the city district of Kinel includes such micro districts as Lebed, Elshnyagi, Gorny and urban villages Alekseyevka and Ust-Kinelsky. The territory of city district is 108,8 sq. km, its population is about 50,9 thousand persons.

Alekseyevka begins on the fortress raised in 1700 under the decree of Peter the Great, at the confluence of Samara and Bolshoy Kinel rivers. The fortress has been named after tsarevitch Aleksey, the son of Peter. The image of this fortress is presented on the arms of city district. Several industrial and agricultural enterprises are located in Alekseyevka.

The Ust-Kinelsky is the centre of the agricultural sciences of the whole Volga region. Here there are such important federal organizations as the Samara state agricultural Academy; large regional machine test station; institute for scientific research of selection and seed-growing; scientific institute of production and agro-processing mechanization.

The city district of Kinel takes the second place in the Samara region according to industrial production index. There are great numbers of enterprises of railway industry, construction engineering and food industry, which form the basis of city economy. Besides, there is the largest logistical center in the city (Open Society «Srednevolzhskaya Logistical Company»), which is the only logistical company in Samara region having the state-of-the-art European equipment.

The education system of the city district is presented by all types of educational institutions, including 3 branches of higher and vocational educational institutions, that is Moscow University of economy, statistics and computer science, Togliatti state Academy of service and regional college of low and economics. On September, 1st, 2007 the new modern Educational Center was opened in Kinel. All this institutions take an active part in city life.

Sports also play an important role in city life. Chess, draft and football competitions are held regularly in Kinel.

The main city sight is the building of the railway station which central part was constructed in 1885; for today it is an architecture monument. The victory park with obelisk in honor of people died during the Great Patriotic War, Kazan icon of Mother of God church and city local history museum are also worth looking at.

Currently Kinel is one of the most successful cities in the Samara region from the point of view of ecology. Transport accessibility, absence of harmful industries and good natural settings are promotive of development of eco-tourism.

Twin-city of Kinel is Suichang (a province Henan, China).

City Day, coincided with railmen’s Day, is celebrated in the first Sunday of August.
